Refinishing an older, worn basketball court wood flooring is one of the most rewarding projects any gym manager can take on. Instead of tearing out a perfectly good decades-old floor and sending it to a landfill, refinishing strips away all the scuffs, faded finish, and old paint lines, revealing fresh, smooth wood underneath that looks and performs exactly like a brand new court. This process can give a 30, 40, or even 50 year old floor another full lifetime of use, and it costs a fraction of what installing a completely new floor would cost.
The first step in any refinishing project is a full inspection of the entire existing floor. Experienced technicians will walk across every square foot of the court, checking for loose planks, small cracks, or damaged spots that need to be repaired before any sanding begins. Any planks that have come loose over the years are re-secured to the subfloor, small cracks are filled with specialized wood filler, and any warped or damaged sections are replaced with matching new wood that blends seamlessly with the rest of the floor. This step ensures that the entire surface is solid and stable before any work on the top layer starts.
Next, the full sanding process begins. Using heavy, professional floor sanding equipment, technicians carefully sand away all of the old finish, the old paint lines, and the top thin layer of worn, scuffed wood. They start with a coarse grit sandpaper to strip off all the old material quickly, then move through progressively finer and finer grits, until the surface of the wood is perfectly smooth, flat, and consistent across the entire court. This process removes decades of accumulated scuffs, stains, and minor wear marks, revealing the fresh, clean natural wood grain that has been hidden under layers of old finish. Technicians take extra care to make sure they do not remove too much wood, so there is still plenty of material left for many more future refinishing projects down the line.
Once the sanding is complete, the entire floor is swept and vacuumed multiple times to remove every last speck of sanding dust. This is a critical step, because even a tiny amount of leftover dust in the wood grain will ruin the smooth finish of the final product. After the surface is completely clean, the new court lines are carefully laid out and painted. Many facilities choose to update their line markings during this step, adjusting to match modern basketball rules or adding new lines for other sports that use the gym, all while keeping the classic character of the original wood floor intact.
Finally, multiple coats of high-performance sports floor finish are applied to the entire surface. Most professional teams apply three to four separate thin coats, with a very light fine-grit sanding done between each coat to ensure the layers bond tightly together. Once the very last coat is fully cured, the old, worn floor has been completely transformed. It looks bright, fresh, and brand new, with perfect traction, perfectly consistent ball bounce, and all the same great performance characteristics of a newly installed floor. A properly done refinish can add 15 to 20 more years of life to an aging basketball court wood flooring, making it one of the most cost-effective upgrades any gym can invest in.
