Getting Started with My Home Gym Floor
So my garage gym had concrete floors hurting my knees during workouts. After watching some DIY videos, I decided sports wooden flooring could fix it. Thought it would be easy: just buy planks and slap them down. Boy was I wrong!

The Shopping Nightmare
First trip to the hardware store got confusing fast. Sales guy kept throwing words like “engineered hardwood” and “gym-grade finish” at me. Ended up buying maple planks labeled “sports use” just because they looked nice. Got home, measured wrong, had to make three extra trips for more wood. Forgot to check the delivery weight too – took four neighbors to help unload!
Installation Mayhem
Started by scrubbing the concrete with vinegar water like YouTube said. Let it dry overnight. Next morning laid the foam underlayer smoothly – felt proud until I noticed it was wrinkling in corners. Then came the planks:
- Trimmed first row with handsaw (gave up after two cuts and rented electric saw)
- Tapping blocks wouldn’t stay put while hammering
- Realized I skipped expansion gaps halfway through
- Used regular glue instead of wood adhesive – planks started lifting next day
Worst part? Dropped heavy plank on my thumb. Nail turned purple but kept going anyway.
Fixing All The Mess-Ups
Had to pry up 60% of my work with crowbar after glue disaster. Went back for proper sports adhesive – stuff smelt like dead fish. Cut wider gaps around walls like articles said. Added corner reinforcements after seeing my uneven cuts. Sanded the whole thing wearing goggles and mask – looked like snowman in sawdust.
Finally Done
Three weeks and tons of frustration later, I’ve got a bouncy wood floor that doesn’t kill my joints. Dropped weights yesterday – no cracks! Learned to measure 7 times, buy once. Would I do it again? Only if I find someone else to handle the sawing.
