So I finally pulled the trigger on putting hardwood floors in my home gym this month. Always wanted that classic basketball court feel without going bankrupt. Here’s how this whole mess went down.

Sticker shock hits first
Started calling local flooring guys for quotes. First dude shows up measuring tape in hand, eyeballs my 20×30 garage space and goes “you’re looking at $10k minimum”. My jaw dropped to the concrete floor. Started scrambling to compare prices:
- Checked big box stores where wood planks cost $3 per square foot
- Local lumber yard quote came in at $2.50 per square foot
- Online supplier had decent maple for $2.80
Every contractor kept adding “extras” though – delivery fees, installation per square foot costs, sanding charges.
The installation circus begins
Hired this crew who promised they did gym floors before. Watched them lay the subfloor crooked on day one. Had to stop them mid-job when I saw gaps wide enough to swallow marbles. They argued it was “normal for wood movement”. Made them tear up three rows before it looked right.
Second disaster hit when they stained it without asking. Came home to this awful orangey color that looked like a bad spray tan. Had to pay extra for sanding it all off. Learned quick: always approve stain samples first.
Breaking down the final damage
Total cost ended up around $8,200 when all said and done. Here’s where every damn dollar went:
- Material: Maple wood planks = $2,300
- Installation labor: Those chuckleheads got $3,500
- Finish: Three coats of special gym varnish = $900
- Mistake tax: Stain removal and rework = $1,500
Lessons from the sweat and sawdust
Would I do it again? Yeah, but different. Next time I’d get unfinished planks and hire separate guys for install and finishing. Maybe even do the sanding myself. That glossy court surface feels amazing under my sneakers now though. Kids actually want to use the gym instead of playing video games. Worth every penny? Almost.
