Man, let me tell you how I tackled this hardwood flooring project for my home gym. It started when I got sick of that nasty rubber mat stink that never went away no matter how much I scrubbed. Seriously, that smell could knock out a horse after deadlifts.

Staring Down the Barrel

First thing was clearing the whole dang room – dragged every dumbbell, bench and that rusty treadmill into the garage. Wife was thrilled about the garage situation obviously. Then came the nasty part – ripping up those old mats that left glue gunk everywhere. Took me three days with a scraper and way too much elbow grease to get that concrete clean.

Wood Wars

Went to the lumber place thinking “how hard could picking wood be?” Wrong question. The guy starts throwing words like “Janka ratings” and “end grain” at me while I’m just trying not to get killed by my own weights. Ended up grabbing oak planks after he showed me one scarred up from some powerlifter’s failed PR attempt.

  • Measure twice cut once: Yeah right – measured my squat rack area four times and still messed up the first cut
  • Gaps are sneaky: Thought I had everything snug until the humidity dropped and suddenly had canyon cracks
  • Stain disasters: Tried that “express drying” stain which proceeded to stay sticky for two weeks

Almost quit when I ran out of planks with only 60% done. Had to wait three weeks for the next shipment since I got the last batch on clearance. Meanwhile my workout gear’s camping in the driveway gathering moss.

Light at the Tunnel’s End

Finally got the last plank in after what felt like forever. That final hammer tap sounded like angels singing. Sealed it up with four coats of that gym-grade urethane stuff that smells like chemical warfare – still airing out the place two months later.

Now? Best decision ever even though I lost three toenails to rogue weights during the project. Dropping plates doesn’t make me cringe anymore and cleaning’s just a quick mop job. Just pray I never have to move that darn treadmill again.
