Alright so today I gotta tell ya the whole story about building this backyard basketball court. Started simple, wanted a place to shoot hoops without driving to that rundown public court downtown.
Getting Concrete Down
First thing? Had to dig out this lumpy patch in my yard. Borrowed my neighbor’s mini excavator – dude’s a lifesaver honestly. Dug about eight inches deep, wrecked my back doing it. Leveled the dirt with a two-by-four like some caveman method, poured gravel, compacted it with this rickety machine from the rental place. Felt like holding onto a jackhammer for three hours straight.
Then came the concrete truck. Driver gave me that look like “you sure about this?” as he dumped three cubic yards right in my driveway. Pushed wet concrete for hours with a bull float – arms felt like jelly by sunset. Used the edge tool to carve grooves around the edges, tossed curing compound on top. Waited a full freakin’ week praying it wouldn’t crack.
Wood Mess Disaster
Ordered maple planks from the lumber yard after watching like two YouTube videos. Mistake. Showed up with warped boards like goddamn bananas. Sent that load back, argued with the manager forever. Second batch had cracks everywhere. Settled for the least terrible ones – sunk $900 already and I’m sweating bullets.
- Measured court lines wrong twice – chalk snapped crooked every time
- Battery died on the circular saw mid-cut (left charger in garage like an idiot)
- Forgot wood needs time to acclimate – planks swelled overnight and buckled
Had to rip out half the floor after screwing it down. Trashed twelve boards, wood shavings covered my entire lawn. Neighbors probably thought I was building a bonfire pit.
Finishing Nightmare
Staining went okay till I hit the second coat. Rag fibers stuck everywhere like fuzzy caterpillars. Sanded again – dust got in my eyes so bad I cried for twenty minutes. Worst part? Screen installer showed up high and drilled through my brand-new wood putting the hoop up. Offered me a $20 discount. Twenty. Bucks.
After three months of this circus? Finally sunk that last shot on my own court. Kids play here every afternoon now – scratches already all over the finish. Looks lived-in though. Ten times better than asphalt.
