Okay, folks, today was all about finally tackling that gym floor project I’ve been putting off for weeks. Found some leftover wood flooring panels in my garage from last year’s living room redo – decent maple stuff, looked sturdy enough for the gym. Figured, why spend more cash if I can use what’s already collecting dust, right?

Getting Started: Clearing the Jungle

First thing, had to empty out the whole space. Dragged my squat rack, dumbbells, and that annoying treadmill into the driveway. Swept up about two years’ worth of dirt, chalk dust, and who-knows-what stuck under the old rubber mats. Found three lost socks and a rusty kettlebell handle – bonus treasures.

The Measuring Meltdown

Grabbed my trusty tape measure and notebook. Measured the room left-to-right, front-to-back… realized the walls aren’t actually straight. Corners were wonky, like someone built this room after a long weekend. Started sweating buckets thinking about gaps. Decided to just add an extra inch on every piece to trim later. Better too much than screaming over a short plank.

Cutting Chaos

Set up the circular saw right there on the lawn. Marked lines on the maple planks with a fat carpenter pencil. The saw screamed like a banshee – sorry, neighbors! – and spat sawdust everywhere. Cut ten pieces before noticing my measuring marks were on the wrong side for half of them. Had to recut five. My dog looked judgy.

Laying It Down: Crooked Tiles & Swearing

Started laying the tiles near the door. Used that click-lock system – snap tile A into tile B, easy peasy. Except real life hates “easy peasy”. The first row went smooth. Second row? Three tiles refused to click. Had to whack ’em with a rubber mallet like they owed me money. My thumbs are bruised proof. Also discovered my “extra inch” meant hacking off edges with a box cutter later. Blisters incoming.

The Final Hurdle: Equipment Tetris

Got all the tiles down after four hours of crawling and grunting. Swept the sawdust off, admired the shiny wood… then hauled everything back in. That treadmill weighed double after fighting with the floor. Dropped a 25lb plate trying to squeeze it past the rack. The wood survived the impact – no dent! Small victories.

Honestly? Looks way fancier than I deserve. Feels solid when I jump, no weird creaks… yet. Time will tell if the weights murder it. But for zero dollars spent? Worth the blisters and the dog’s judgment. Just maybe buy new tiles if you ain’t got leftovers – your thumbs will thank you.
