The Whole Idea Started

So yeah, basketball court hardwood flooring – sounds fancy, right? Always dreamed of having one in my big, mostly empty basement. Finally decided to just do it last month. Started by clearing out like a decade’s worth of junk. Hauled boxes, moved that old ping pong table nobody used, swept up dust bunnies big enough to scare a cat. Took me a whole sweaty weekend just to see bare concrete again.

Buying the Wood

Went down to the big lumber place near the highway. Told the guy behind the counter I needed maple planks for a basketball court. He just raised his eyebrow, asked “Serious?”, then shrugged and pointed me to the specialty section. Let me tell ya, seeing the price per plank? Nearly choked. Ended up grabbing a slightly cheaper oak instead. Loaded the truck myself, stacking board after board. My back felt that later!

The Real Grind Begins

Got home, hauled all those heavy planks down the basement stairs. One by one. Worst part, hands down. Started laying them out. Followed the instructions I found online – staggering the ends, leaving that tiny gap for expansion. Used my trusty old hammer and a bunch of those finishing nails. Smacked my thumb good a few times. Loud curses definitely happened down there. Thought it was going pretty smooth until I realized the floor wasn’t perfectly level. Ended up with a couple of boards that just wouldn’t sit flush. Had to get creative with shims and extra nails, bending stuff to fit. Not exactly textbook.

Nailing the Finish

After what felt like forever (and a bruised thumb), the big floor space was covered. Time for the finish. Applied a sealer first. Stuff smelled real strong, had all the windows open and fans blowing. Once it dried, started sanding. Used the orbital sander until my hand vibrated for hours. Dust got absolutely everywhere – hair, nose, lungs, I think. Finally, slapped on three coats of that polyurethane finish. Tried to be super careful, but still got a few drips and bubbles. Eh, character, right? Let the whole thing cure for days. Couldn’t touch it.

First Bounce

Waited a week just to be safe. Dragged the basketball hoop in. Took that first dribble. That sound… the solid thump thump bouncing off the hard wood. Man, it sounded legit. Not NBA quality by any stretch. Got that slight uneven spot near the corner, and some gaps aren’t perfectly even. But it’s solid, it works, and I built it. Worth every sore muscle, frustrating shim, and whiff of toxic sealant. Just gotta practice my free throws now.
