Creating and maintaining the right environmental conditions inside your gym is the single most important thing you can do to make sure your basketball court wood flooring stays in perfect condition for 50 years or more. Wood is a natural material that responds directly to the temperature and humidity of the air around it, and keeping those conditions stable and consistent eliminates almost every single common problem that can damage a wood floor. With a few simple, low-cost adjustments to your gym’s climate control, you can avoid warping, cupping, shrinking, and almost all other preventable floor damage.

The ideal relative humidity range for a wood basketball court is between 45% and 55%, at all times of the year. This is the sweet spot where the wood planks hold exactly the right amount of internal moisture, so they do not expand too much or shrink too much. When humidity stays inside this range, the tiny gaps between the planks stay small and consistent, the surface of the floor stays perfectly flat, and the wood never experiences the kind of stress that leads to warping or cracking. The best way to monitor this is to install a few accurate humidity sensors around the gym, so you can check the levels every day and make adjustments as needed.

In the humid summer months, when outdoor humidity levels can climb to 70% or higher, a properly sized dehumidifier will pull excess moisture out of the air inside the gym, keeping the levels inside that ideal 45-55% range. This stops the wood from absorbing too much moisture and swelling up, which is what causes the common problem of cupping, where the edges of the planks rise up higher than the center. Running the gym’s ventilation system to bring in dry outdoor air on low-humidity days can also help reduce excess moisture, without needing to run the dehumidifier nonstop.

In the dry winter months, when heating systems pull all the moisture out of the indoor air, humidity levels can drop down to 20% or lower very quickly. This extremely dry air pulls moisture right out of the wood planks, making them shrink rapidly and create large, wide gaps between each plank. In very severe cases, this dryness can even cause cracks to form along the wood grain. A whole-gym humidifier adds just enough moisture back into the air to bring levels back up to that ideal range, keeping the wood stable and preventing those large gaps and cracks from forming.

Temperature control is also important, but it is far less critical than humidity. Keeping the gym at a consistent temperature between 60 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit at all times is more than enough. The biggest mistake to avoid is letting the gym get extremely hot and humid for days at a time when no one is using it, which can cause the wood to absorb moisture rapidly and warp. Even if you turn the heat down when the gym is empty in the winter, never let the temperature drop so low that the air becomes extremely dry. By keeping these conditions stable all year round, your basketball court wood flooring will stay perfectly smooth, flat, and problem-free for generations of players.
