Getting Started with the Sports Hall Floor
Alright so our local gym’s basketball court was completely wrecked after that crazy tournament last month. I was like man we gotta fix this before someone trips and breaks their neck. Did some quick research and settled on maple hardwood – heard it bounces well and doesn’t splinter easily.
First steps:
- Ripped out the nasty old vinyl first
- Found some gnarly concrete cracks underneath – ugh surprise repairs
- Mixed filler crap from Home Depot at 3AM cursing under my breath
Took two whole weekends just sanding that concrete slab flat. My back was killing me! Protip: rent a industrial sander unless you wanna feel like an 80-year-old after.
The Real Struggle Begins
Unrolled the vapor barrier like cheap cling wrap – kept ripping at the corners. Had to duct tape it like a caveman. Then came the actual planks…
Day 1 disaster: Tried putting boards together like puzzle pieces. Turns out wood expands overnight and next morning half the planks looked like bananas! Wasted $200 worth cause I didn’t leave those stupid expansion gaps.
My buddy Dave showed up with laser levels while I was eyeballing it like an idiot. We ended up:
- Chalking mad zigzag lines
- Pre-drilling every single nail hole
- Using spacers from broken Lego sets (don’t judge)
Final Push
After two weeks of looking like cave trolls covered in sawdust, we finished laying the last plank at 3AM. Applied finish with these microfiber mops – felt like painting the Sistine Chapel with a toothbrush. Three coats later and wow… that shine almost blinded us!
Now the test: threw a basketball at center court. That sweet “thump-thump-thump” sound? Perfect. Kids tried scratching it with keys – not a mark. Worth every bloody knuckle and splinter.
