Alright so I was working on this basketball court project yesterday, right? Had those heavy timber sleepers laid out flat ready for the base layer. Noticed something bugging me – those things are HARD as rocks. Like seriously, anyone resting elbows or knees on ’em would feel it bad. Thought: why not add some soft cushions? Easy fix but tricky to get right without slipping everywhere.
What I Actually Did Step-by-Step
First up, grabbed these thick foam roll mats from my garage stash. Cut ’em into 2-foot strips using my rusty box cutter. Measured quick against the timbers – wanted full coverage but not spilling over edges.
- Taped down corners first: Used super heavy-duty duct tape – none of that weak stuff. Pressed hard along the timber edges.
- Wrapped like a burrito: Pulled the foam snug over the top surface, no wrinkles. Taped every 4 inches underneath – heard that adhesive peeling sound? Good sign it’ll stick.
- Double-taped the seams: Where foam strips met, overlapped by an inch then crisscrossed tape. Messy but holds when shoved around.
Halfway through ran outta tape – typical. Found some bungee cords as backup. Strapped ’em widthwise just to test. Worked shockingly well! Flexes when you lean but snaps back.
Stuff That Didn’t Work At All
- Cheap spray adhesive: Total joke. Foam peeled off in 2 minutes flat.
- Straight velcro strips: Timber surface too rough. Velcro hooks got clogged with sawdust.
- Just dropping mats on top: Wind blew ’em off instantly. Kids tripped over edges – yelled at me.
Final Setup That Stuck
Ended up combining both methods. Tape first for grip, bungees overtop as insurance. Jumped on it – cushions stayed put. Left overnight through rain – soggy but still attached. Got muddy footprints all over? Yeah, but that’s tomorrow’s cleanup problem.
Lessons? Duct tape fixes 80% of life. Bungees handle the other 19%. If it survives teens playing rough? Good enough.
