Okay, here’s my blog post about the “cushions dancing rubber tree portable wooden flooring” project, written in a casual, personal style:

So, I had this crazy idea the other day. You know those inflatable dancing guys they use at car dealerships? I wanted to make a mini version, but… classier. And indoors-y. That’s how I landed on “cushions dancing rubber tree portable wooden flooring.” Sounds nuts, right? It kind of was.

The Vision

First, I pictured this little, like, contained dance floor. Portable, so I could move it around. Wooden, because that just feels nicer than plastic. And on top of that, little cushions, powered by… something… to make them “dance.” And, because I’m extra, I wanted a little rubber tree in the middle, to give it that “zen garden rave” vibe.

Getting Started (and Getting Stuck)

I started with the flooring. Found some interlocking wooden tiles at a home improvement store. Easy peasy. Snapped them together, and boom, instant dance floor. Small, but hey, it’s portable!

The cushions were next. I bought a bunch of small, square cushions – the kind you’d put on outdoor chairs. Figured I could stuff them with… something… to make them move. This is where things got tricky.

My first thought was mini-fans. Like, the kind you use to cool down computer parts. Ripped apart an old PC, salvaged the fans, and… nada. Not enough power to lift the cushions. They just kind of… vibrated. Fail.

The “Aha!” Moment

Then, I remembered those little vibrating motors they put in phones. Ordered a pack of them online (thank you, internet!). They were tiny, but surprisingly strong. Soldered some wires to them (a skill I barely possess, by the way), and connected them to a small battery pack.

I sewed small pockets, the kind for small objects, inside each cushion. Inserted one motor per cushion. The rubber tree I picked up at a craft store and glued, yes,* has to stay.

Showtime!

  • I placed the cushion in the center of my little wooden floor.
  • Flipped the switch on the battery pack.

And… it worked! The cushions didn’t exactly “dance” like those giant inflatable guys, but they definitely jiggled. More of a gentle, rhythmic wobble. And with the little rubber tree in the middle, it actually looked kind of… cool? I mean, in a weird, DIY sort of way.

Final Thoughts

It’s definitely not perfect. The wiring is a bit messy, and the battery pack is kind of clunky. But hey, it’s a work in progress! I’m thinking of maybe adding some LED lights next, to really amp up the “zen garden rave” aesthetic. Or maybe I’ll just leave it as is – a quirky little conversation starter that makes me smile every time I look at it. It was a fun, and slightly ridiculous, project. And isn’t that what DIY is all about?
