So I was redoing my garage gym last month and thought oak flooring might work good for it. Saw some fancy pictures online, but man the real deal ain’t simple.

Why Oak Flooring?
First off, my rubber mats smelled awful after years and looked nasty. Wanted something solid that could handle weights dropping. Figured oak’s tough – our kitchen table survived kids banging forks for ten years!
Went to Lowe’s to check prices. Almost choked seeing the cost per plank! Guy there talked me into buying three sample boards to test first.
The Disaster Tests
Tried abusing those samples like crazy:
- Dropped my 45lb plate straight on one – HUGE dent appeared instantly
- Spilled pre-workout powder and it stained yellow permanently
- Forgot sweat towel – next morning dark water rings everywhere
- Worst was deadlift failure – board cracked clean through like toast
What Actually Sorta Worked
Got mad and started experimenting:
- Sealed one board with garage floor epoxy – felt like skating rink when sweaty
- Tried outdoor deck sealant – smelled awful for weeks
- Finally found thick polyurethane coating that helped a little with water, but still dented easy
Mounting Nightmare
Thought nailing would be easy. WRONG.
First board split lengthwise when hammering. Next one bounced the nail back into my shin – still got the bruise! Ended up renting a pneumatic nail gun and goggles. Dust everywhere – looked like flour bomb exploded in my garage.
Final Verdict?
Unless you got money to replace planks constantly… nah. Looks beautiful first week until you actually USE the gym. Now got ugly but practical rubber tiles covering my sad oak experiment. Maybe good for yoga room… if you never sweat.
My take? Oak for living rooms, concrete coating for real gyms. Done wrestling with fancy wood.
