Okay, here’s my blog post about putting together some volleyball court flooring:
Alright, so I’ve been wanting to set up a little volleyball practice area in my backyard for a while now. Nothing too fancy, just something better than playing on the grass. I finally got around to doing it, so I figured I’d share how it went.
First, I measured out the area I wanted. I didn’t need a full-size court, just enough space to bump and set around. Once I had the dimensions, I went to the home improvement store and grabbed some plywood. I opted for the thicker stuff, figuring it would hold up better to the elements and, you know, people jumping on it.
Then I pick up the battens, Because I’m going to need some support under the plywood. I think that the batten is the key.
Getting Started
Back home, the first real step was clearing the ground. I removed all the grass and weeds, and then I raked the area to make it as level as possible. It wasn’t perfectly flat, but I figured close enough was good enough.
Next, I laid out the battens. I spaced them out evenly to provide support for the plywood sheets. This part was kind of a pain, trying to get everything lined up and level-ish. I used a long level and did a lot of adjusting, shoving dirt under the battens in some spots to get them even.
Putting It Together
With the battens in place, I started laying down the plywood. I screwed the plywood into the battens, making sure to use plenty of screws so it wouldn’t come loose. I worked my way across the area, adding one sheet of plywood at a time.
- Measure and cut plywood.
- Lay out and level battens.
- Screw plywood to battens.
It was a lot of bending over and screwing, and my back was definitely feeling it by the end. But, hey, it was starting to look like a real court!
Finishing Up
Once all the plywood was down, I took a step back and looked at my handiwork. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a heck of a lot better than playing on the grass. I was ready to practice the volleyball with my family.
It is not a difficult project. If I can do that, I think you can do that too!
