One of the most unique and personal parts of any indoor basketball court wood floor is the custom line painting and artwork that turns a plain wooden surface into a space that has its own identity and character. Every court has its own set of standard lines: the baseline, sidelines, free throw line, three-point arc, center circle, and the key under each basket. But beyond those mandatory standard lines, facility managers can add custom colors, team logos, school mottos, sponsor marks, and creative artwork that makes the court feel like a true home for the community that uses it. The process of painting these lines and graphics on a wood floor is a careful, highly skilled craft. After the floor has been freshly sanded, the painters start by measuring every single line on the court with extreme precision. They use long tape measures, laser levels, and chalk lines to make sure every distance is exactly correct. The three-point line has to be the exact right distance from the basket, the free throw line has to be perfectly parallel to the baseline, and the center circle has to be perfectly centered in the middle of the court. For large logos with multiple colors, each color is applied one at a time, with time to dry in between, before the masking tape for that section is removed and new tape is laid down for the next color. Once all the paint is fully dry, multiple clear top coats of finish are applied over the entire surface. The paint never touches the shoes of the players; it is completely protected under the clear finish. This means the lines stay bright and crisp for years, and they never peel, fade, or chip away.
