Alright, folks, let’s talk about my little weekend project – laying down some batten dancing plywood wooden flooring. I’m no expert, but I figured, how hard could it be? Famous last words, right?
Prepping the Space
First things first, I cleared out the room. Everything. Furniture, rugs, the cat’s favorite scratching post – all gone. Then I gave the existing floor a good sweep and vacuum. I even scrubbed a couple of sticky spots I found (no idea what that was). I wanted a nice, clean surface to work with.
The Battens
Next up, the battens. These are just simple wooden strips. I measured the room and figured out how many I’d need, then headed to the local hardware store.
I chose some pretty standard pine ones – nothing fancy. Back home, I laid them out across the floor, spacing them evenly.
I used my trusty measuring tape to make sure the spacing was consistent. This part was kind of like putting together a giant puzzle.
- Measure and cut battens.
- Lay out battens with even spacing.
- Double Check spacing,I use my old tape.
The Plywood
Now for the plywood. I opted for a decent thickness – not too thin, not too thick. I didn’t want it to feel flimsy. I carried those heavy sheets into the room (my back is still complaining).
I started laying the plywood sheets over the battens, making sure they were snug against each other. And I staggered the joints, like you do with bricks. It just looks better that way, and I think it’s stronger, too.
Screwing it Down
This is where the real work began. I grabbed my drill and a box of screws. I started screwing the plywood down to the battens, making sure to sink the screws just below the surface.
I didn’t want any bumps sticking up. Let me tell you, there were a lot of screws. My arm got a serious workout.
The Finishing Touches
Once all the plywood was down, I filled in the screw holes with wood filler.
I waited for it to dry, then I sanded the whole floor smooth. I felt like a real craftsman at this point!
Finally, I put a couple of coats of sealant on top.
The Result
And that’s it! My new batten dancing plywood wooden floor. It’s not perfect, there are a few little imperfections here and there, but you know what? I built it with my own two hands. And that feels pretty darn good. It creaks a little in one spot, but hey, it adds character, right? I’m already planning my next project…
