My volleyball pad flooring hustle started when I busted my knee

Took my lazy butt to some local sports equipment stores first. Big mistake. Employees either stared blankly like I asked for moon rocks or pointed at glued-down indoor courts saying “Kinda similar?” Zero help. One dude seriously suggested laminate flooring from a home store. Yeah, buddy – that’ll warp faster than wet cardboard.

Hunted down some specialty flooring suppliers. Finally found one near the city with actual portable court sections. They let me walk on samples – felt the springy pad underneath the maple surface. Almost cried it felt so good on my dodgy knee. But then saw the price tag. Yikes. My wallet screamed “NOPE!”

Got home frustrated. Remembered that shop mentioned they sell factory seconds – slightly imperfect pieces. Called back next day pretending I wanted a huge order. Chatty guy on the phone spilled they had a batch sitting dusty in their warehouse. Jumped in my car, hustled over, and pretended to inspect ’em like a pro. Tiny scratches, barely noticeable. Haggled hard and got the whole setup for like 60% off the new stuff. Boss move!

Threw it down in my yard real quick – interlocked pieces fit tight. Played five minutes barefoot just ‘cause I could. Felt glorious. Learned three big things:

• Skip the mass-market places – total waste of time for niche sports stuff
• Ask about rejects or overstock – that’s where real deals hide
• Test samples physically if possible – photos lie about thickness and bounce

Seriously, if you need this stuff, don’t go in blind online. Dig deeper and ask the awkward questions. Saved a fortune that way.
