Alright folks, here’s how I tackled putting down vinyl sport flooring in my home gym space here in Oakland. Wanted something tough enough for daily workouts but easy on my tired joints.
Planning & Measuring
First up, I grabbed my beat-up tape measure and crawled around the garage floor for an hour. Sketching measurements on an old pizza box flap because I forgot my notebook. Needed to calculate exactly how many vinyl planks and padding sheets to buy.
- Cleared out years of junk – dusty bikes, holiday decorations, even found my kid’s missing rollerblades
- Level check disaster – discovered a gnarly dip near the water heater where water always pooled
- Budget reality hit – saw premium shock-absorbing pads but settled for thicker mid-grade ones
Material Hunt
Drove to three different flooring spots across Morris County on Tuesday. Nearly gave up when second place told me “eight week backorder”. Finally scored these interlocking vinyl tiles – kinda like giant puzzle pieces but rubbery. Threw in extra transition strips just in case.
Key finds:
- Got last two boxes of 6mm shock pads (guy gave me 10% discount for taking floor models)
- Snagged this gnarly rubber mallet on clearance – looks like it survived a war
- Forgot adhesive tape first trip – had to go back next morning
Subfloor Saga
Biggest nightmare phase. Had to fix that damn depression near the heater. Scooped out weird concrete gunk previous owner used. Took three bags of leveling compound while blasting 90s hip-hop. Sweated through two shirts waiting for it to dry – turned my garage into a sauna.
Installing Tiles
Started at the back corner Sunday morning with coffee. Unrolled the padding like giant yoga mats – cut around pipes with kitchen scissors. First row went smooth until tile #7 didn’t lock right. Chipped a corner trying to force it. Pro tip: wiggle pieces sideways instead of hammering downward!
- Trim headaches – near the water pipes, needed like twelve angle cuts
- Adhesive tape fails – humid weather made tape useless, switched to glue dots
- Final row panic – tiles expanded overnight and jammed against wall
Finish Line Victory
Dropped the last tile around midnight. Wiped everything down with this crazy citrus cleaner that made the whole garage smell like a fruit basket. Stood there sweating in my socks doing lunges to test grip – no sliding! Still feel a twinge of pride walking past that uneven doorway transition though.
Total win except my back still hurts from kneeling so long. Would I do it again? Ask me after this Advil kicks in.
