Okay, so I’ve been wanting to upgrade my home gym for a while, and I finally decided to tackle the flooring. I play a lot of volleyball, so I figured, why not make it feel like a real court? I went with a batten volleyball lvl larch assembled wooden flooring. It sounds fancy, but really it’s just putting together a bunch of wood.
Getting Started
First things first, I cleared out the entire room. This was probably the most annoying part, moving all the weights and equipment. Then, I gave the concrete subfloor a good sweep and vacuum. You want a nice, clean surface to work with.
The Batten System
Next up was the batten system. These are basically wooden strips that create a framework for the flooring. I laid them out across the floor, making sure they were evenly spaced. I used a measuring tape and a level – a lot. I screwed the battens into the concrete using concrete screws. Drill, screw, repeat. It took a while, but it’s super important to get this part right. The battens are your foundation.
Laying the Larch
With the battens in place, it was time for the actual flooring. The larch planks came pre-assembled in sections, which was a lifesaver. I started in one corner and worked my way across the room, clicking the sections together. They have this tongue-and-groove system, so they fit together pretty snugly. I used a rubber mallet to tap them into place, making sure everything was nice and tight. Sometimes a piece would be stubborn, and I’d have to bang on it a little harder.
Cutting and Finishing
Of course, I had to cut some pieces to fit around the edges of the room. I used a circular saw for this. Measure twice, cut once, that’s what they say. I’m not the best with power tools, but I managed to get it done without losing any fingers.
Once all the flooring was down, I installed some trim around the perimeter to give it a finished look. A little bit of caulking to fill in any gaps, and that was pretty much it.
The Final Result
Honestly, it took a lot longer than I expected, maybe a full weekend of solid work. But looking at it now, it was totally worth it. My home gym looks awesome, and it feels amazing to play volleyball on. It’s springy and gives just the right amount of support. My knees are thanking me already! Plus, I did it all myself, which is pretty satisfying.
