How I Tackled That Oakland NJ Sport Flooring Project

Alright, so the basement was basically a concrete cave. Cold, ugly, and useless for anything fun. I decided enough was enough – we needed real sport flooring down there. Oakland, NJ had a few places nearby, so I jumped in the truck and started looking around.

First thing, figuring out what kind of stuff they actually sold. Some spots pushed rubber tiles hard, others kept talking about vinyl rolls. Me, I wanted something tough like wood. Dug into it a bit more, asking folks who did rec rooms. Kept hearing “hardwood’s king” for bouncing balls and feeling good under your feet. Made sense. Settled on oak – classic, solid, supposed to last ages.

Hauling that lumber home was a workout. Boxes and boxes, heavy as all get-out. Cleared the whole basement floor out – swept every speck of dust, vacuumed like crazy. Had to check the concrete underneath was level. Guess what? It wasn’t. Some spots were lower, just dips really, but enough to mess up the planks later. Mixed up some leveling compound – messy stuff – poured it in the dips, smoothed it rough with a board. Took its sweet time drying overnight.

Time to lay the actual planks. Started in one corner, laying down that thin foam stuff first for a bit of cushion and quiet. Then, plank by plank. Clicking the tongue-and-groove ends together mostly went okay. Mostly. Had a few planks that didn’t want to play nice, refused to click down smooth. Needed some gentle persuasion with a rubber mallet. Cut the end pieces with a regular saw, trying like heck to make straight lines. Let’s just say my cuts weren’t always gallery-perfect, but close enough.

Sanding came next. Rented a big floor sander – noisy beast! Went with the grain, careful not to dig grooves. Sanded forever. Felt like every inch. Stained the wood a nice medium brown – did two coats, wiping off the extra. Then the clear finish. Used polyurethane. That stuff is temperamental! First coat looked good, second coat… oh boy. Put it on a bit too thick near the wall. Got brush lines and a little cloudiness. Sanded just that spot rougher, wiped clean, and tried again lighter. Finally got three smooth coats down.

The best part? Finally getting the basketball hoop set back up. Threw down a small mat underneath just for kicks. The ball bounces true off this oak floor now – no weird dead spots. Bare feet feel great on it. Seems way tougher than that vinyl stuff everyone else had. Took work, learned some lessons about finish application the hard way, but that basement? Totally transformed. Oakland NJ zoning rules about basements? Checked that too, thankfully was all good for this kind of upgrade. Happy with how it came out.
