So last week I got this call about putting down sport flooring for some community center in Jersey. Honestly, I almost turned it down. Sport floors? Sounds simple, but man, figuring out the right stuff is its own headache.
The Planning Mess
First thing, I needed to figure out what the heck kind of material to buy. The budget was tight, real tight. I started calling around for PVC flooring quotes – you know, that roll-out stuff they use a lot for gyms and table tennis areas? Talked to a few places about Gerflor and Tarkett brands, but man, the prices nearly choked me. Quality costs, I get it, but the center folks were sweating the numbers.
Then I remembered chatting with another installer a couple months back about cheaper stuff from China. He mentioned a bunch of Chinese companies jumping into the market – names like Hebei HaoKang Sports Goods and stuff. Sounded promising. Looked into it, found some stuff called JR4557, 4.5mm thick – supposedly good for table tennis, basketball, all that. Price was way better. But cheap? It always makes me nervous. You wonder what corners got cut, right? Got a few samples sent over fast.
Getting Down and Dirty (Literally)
Okay, fast forward. The materials showed up, mostly looking decent. We cleared out the old concrete floor – dusty nightmare, masks sucked. Prepared the subfloor, spent ages making sure it was level. Smooth as glass? Ha! Took forever sanding down some bumps.
Then came the glue. We started unrolling the PVC planks. Felt heavier than the fancy brands, honestly. Cutting them was… a chore. The adhesive? Tried spreading it evenly, but this stuff seemed extra gooey. Messy! Felt like I spent half my time scrubbing glue off my hands and tools. We laid it down carefully, pressed it hard to seal it. Air bubbles hiding everywhere – got out the heavy roller and went back and forth like a million times. Sweating buckets.
The last step was checking our work against the inspection standards they gave us. Thickness? Had to measure spots everywhere. Level? Broke out the laser again. Felt like forever checking every darn square foot.
Crossing the Finish Line (And Dodging a Headache)
Thankfully, it passed inspection first try! Place actually looks pretty good. Kids started bouncing balls on it right away. That cheap JR4557 stuff? Held up fine so far. Did I get nervous about buying it? Yeah, constantly. Did it work out? Seems like it… this time.
But here’s the thing nobody tells you. Right after we finished, guess who calls? That center’s director. She starts off saying the floor looks great, everyone loves it… perfect! Then she casually asks when we’re starting on the other half of the building they forgot to mention. Told her that wasn’t part of the deal! Nearly dropped my wrench. Gotta watch for that sneaky “extra” stuff.
