Alright, guys, let’s talk about my little project – setting up a portable wooden floor for volleyball. I’ve always wanted a decent surface to play on, and those flimsy mats just weren’t cutting it. So, I decided to go all-in and build something solid.

Gathering the Goods

First things first, I needed wood. Lots of it. I went with some pretty standard batten, figured it would be sturdy enough. I measured out the area I wanted to cover in my backyard, did some quick maths, I don’t remember the specifics, and hauled a bunch of wood from my local hardware store. Also, got some plywood sheets to have a flat foundation. It’s not exactly professional-grade, but hey, it’s for my backyard, right?

Putting It Together

The real work began with laying down the plywood. I needed a stable base, you know? So, I cleared the area, leveled it out as best as I could (no fancy tools, just a good old shovel and some elbow grease), and placed these sheets down. I secured them, just to make sure they didn’t go wander off.

Next up, the batten. I started laying them down, one by one, making sure they were snug against each other. I used a basic hammer to try and get them aligned, but it took time, and I admit my back wasn’t thrilled with it. There was a bit of trial and error, adjusting things here and there, but I slowly made my own way.

The Finishing Touches (or Lack Thereof)

Honestly, I didn’t do much in terms of finishing. I thought about sanding it down and maybe applying some sort of sealant, but… I got lazy. I mean, it’s outdoors, it’s gonna get weathered anyway. So, I just left it as is. Maybe not the smartest move, but I was eager to start playing!

Playing Time!

Once everything was (kind of) in place, it was time to test it out. I grabbed my volleyball, roped in a few friends, and we started playing. It was definitely an upgrade from the grass or those cheap mats. The ball bounced better, and it felt more like a “real” court. Was it perfect? Nope. Were there some uneven spots? You bet. But did we have fun? Absolutely!

It wasn’t a perfect job, and it probably won’t last forever, but it’s MY wooden volleyball floor, and I built it myself. And that, my friends, feels pretty darn good. Now, who’s up for a game?
