Alright, guys, let’s talk about my little weekend project: putting in some batten basketball solid assembling wooden flooring. It wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be, and honestly, it turned out pretty darn good!

Getting Started

>

First things first, I cleared out the room. Everything. Furniture, rugs, the whole nine yards. It’s much easier to work in an empty space, trust me. Then, I gave the subfloor a good sweep and checked for any loose nails or screws. Gotta make sure that surface is smooth and clean.

Laying Down the Battens

Next up, the battens. these are the long wooden pieces that form the support. I measured the room, and with some friends’ help, we just use some nails fix them on the ground. Make sure keep them in same space.

The Fun Part: Assembling the Floor

Now for the actual flooring! This stuff was “assembling,” meaning the pieces interlock. It’s kind of like a giant puzzle, which, I gotta admit, was pretty satisfying.

  • I started in one corner, laying down the first piece and making sure it was snug against the wall (using spacers to leave a little gap for expansion – important!).
  • Then, I just kept adding pieces, clicking them together. The “click” sound is actually really rewarding, you know you’ve got it right.
  • For the edges, I had to cut some pieces to fit. I just use some simple tools like saw.

Finishing Touches

Once all the flooring was down, I removed the spacers and installed the baseboards to cover up that expansion gap. And… that was pretty much it! I stood back, admired my handiwork, and felt a huge sense of accomplishment. It’s not perfect, but it’s my hand-made basketball court and it is pretty cool, and the kids love it.

Honestly, if I can do it, anyone can. It just takes a bit of planning, some elbow grease, and maybe a few YouTube tutorials. Don’t be afraid to give it a shot!
