Alright, guys, let’s talk about my little weekend project: putting together a batten basketball sleeper assembled wooden flooring. Sounds fancy, huh? It’s basically a wooden floor for my indoor basketball practice area. I wanted something with a bit of give, you know, not just straight concrete.
Getting Started
First things first, I cleared out the space. This involved moving a bunch of junk – old boxes, a broken treadmill I swear I’ll fix one day, the usual. Once I had a blank canvas (a dusty concrete floor), I gave it a good sweep. You don’t want any little pebbles messing things up later.
Laying the Battens
Next up were the battens. These are basically just lengths of timber that create a framework. I laid them out across the floor, making sure they were evenly spaced. I used a measuring tape, and a level and try my best keep them flat,I spent a good couple of hours just fiddling with these, making sure they were all lined up right and level. It’s kind of important because these battens are the foundation for the whole thing.
The “Sleeper” Part
Now, the “sleeper” bit. This is where I added some rubber pads under the battens. This is what gives the floor that nice bouncy feel.I put a little rubber square every foot or so. It’s tedious, but so worth it in the end!
Putting Down the Wood
With the battens and sleepers in place, it was time for the actual wood flooring. I’d picked up some pre-assembled panels – thank goodness, because nailing down individual boards would have taken forever. I started at one end of the room and worked my way across, clicking the panels together. It was actually pretty satisfying, like a giant jigsaw puzzle.
Almost There…
I had to cut some of the panels to fit around the edges of the * part was a little tricky, but I managed.
Finishing Touches
Finally, I added some trim around the edges to make it look all nice and finished. I stood back and admired my handiwork. Not bad for a weekend’s work, if I do say so myself!
Now I’ve got a sweet little practice area where I can work on my jump shot without killing my knees. It’s not perfect, but it’s mine, and I built it. And that, my friends, is pretty darn satisfying.
