Getting Started with the Rubber Floor Project
So I finally decided to redo my basement space for home workouts last month. My old carpet was all busted from weights and kettlebells dragging across it. After watching a bunch of YouTube videos, rubber sport flooring seemed like the smart move.
Finding Supplies in New Jersey
First thing was calling around local hardware stores asking about rubber tiles. Most either didn’t carry them or quoted crazy prices. Took me three days of Googling before finding this warehouse near Jersey City with leftover commercial gym flooring.
What I grabbed:
- 24 interlocking black rubber tiles (3/4″ thickness)
- 1 gallon adhesive recommended by the warehouse guy
- Utility knife with extra blades
- Cheap rubber mallet from Harbor Freight
The Messy Installation Process
Cleared out everything from the basement first – took half a day just moving junk to the driveway. The concrete underneath had these weird stains, so I scrubbed it down with vinegar and water. Let it dry overnight before starting.
Started laying tiles from the corner, smearing adhesive on each piece’s edges. That glue smelled like rotten eggs! Had to keep the windows open. The interlocking system was trickier than I thought – had to whack tiles hard with the mallet to connect them properly.
Funny disaster moment: Cut a tile wrong near the furnace and wasted two pieces. Blades kept getting stuck halfway through the rubber – ended up scoring lines three times before clean breaks.
Finishing Touches & Lessons Learned
Took two full weekends cause I could only work evenings after my day job. For the edges, I measured gaps and hand-cut filler strips. Dropped a 45lb plate from shoulder height as a test – bounced without any noise or floor damage!
Things I’d do different next time:
- Buy 20% extra tiles for mistakes
- Get those fancy floor rolling tools for better adhesion
- Not do this in summer humidity – took longer to dry
Total cost came around $900 instead of the $1,500+ quotes I got from installers. My knees don’t ache during workouts anymore and dropped weights don’t shake the whole house. Worth every sweaty hour!
