Okay, so rubber hardwood flooring – sounded weird, right? Cheap, supposedly eco-friendly, easy for DIY? Had to try it myself. Grabbed some samples first. Felt… rubbery. Like a firm gym mat, but with a wood pattern printed on top. Weird texture.

Why Bother Trying This Stuff?
Honestly? Pure curiosity and the price tag. Saw it online way cheaper than real hardwood. Figured it might be okay for the basement playroom. Flooring guy at the big box store shrugged. Said “Some folks like it. Won’t soak up spills, at least.” Good enough for me. Bought a few boxes.
The Actual Install Mess
Started simple. Swept the concrete floor clean, laid down that thin foam underlayment they sell with it. First few planks clicked together kinda okay. Felt flimsy when I walked on them. Way lighter than laminate. Then the trouble hit:
- Cutting Nightmare: Grabbed the utility knife like the instructions said. Scored it, tried snapping it. Messy. Uneven breaks. Dust everywhere. Ended up using the jigsaw just to get clean edges. Super soft material, so it chewed it up a bit.
- Gaps Galore: Even clicking ’em tight, little gaps kept popping up between planks. Felt like they shrank or expanded just breathing on ’em wrong. Tapped ’em back together with a rubber mallet, but next day? Gaps back. Annoying.
- Underlayment Bubbles: That thin foam? If the floor underneath isn’t dead flat, which mine wasn’t, you see every single lump. Felt like walking on bubble wrap in spots. Too late to stop once you’ve clicked a bunch together.
The “Finished” Look & Feel
After sweating it out and swearing more than expected, got it down. From a distance? Looks like cheap laminate. Up close? You can see the printed pattern repeat. Touch it? Definitely feels like rubber. Weird. Kid spilled juice – wiped right up, no stain. That part was nice. But dropped a wooden block toy? Left a tiny dent. Not rock solid.
Honest Verdict After Walking On It
Would I do it again? Maybe only for a super low-traffic, spill-prone spot where nothing heavy will ever sit. Basement playroom? Yeah, it kinda works for that. Feels soft underfoot. But man, that rubber feel isn’t fooling anyone. It’s not wood, it just looks sorta like wood. Click-together system felt flimsy compared to decent laminate. Cheap? For sure. Looks cheap? Yeah, that too. Got the job done quick & dirty for a messy room, but wouldn’t want this stuff anywhere else in my house. Feels like a gym floor wearing wood pajamas.
