Alright folks, let’s talk about assembling this rubber basketball sleeper floor. This whole thing started ’cause I needed some kinda play area in my cramped garage, figured why not put in a basketball floor? Sounds simple, right? Didn’t even realize “sleeper” meant putting sleepers under the wood at first. Rookie move.

Get the Stuff

First off, gotta get the wood. Picked up some cheap plywood sheets from the local lumber place – the warped ones nobody wants, figured I could bash ’em flat. Biggest mistake, honestly. Then got these weird rubber blocks they call ‘sleepers’ – meant to float the floor above concrete. Had to measure my garage about ten times ’cause I suck at math.

Prepping the Mess

Got home, garage floor was dusty and covered in old oil stains. Couldn’t scrub it clean worth a darn. Just laid down some plastic sheeting I found in the shed – probably meant for painting – and hoped the rubber would cover it. Threw the sleepers down on top, tried spacing ’em out kinda even like the YouTube videos said. Looked like a bunch of black erasers tossed across the floor.

Smashing Wood

Started wrestling the plywood sheets into place. That warped plywood? Total nightmare. Had to jump on the corners just to get ’em to kinda sit down. Screwed the plywood down into the sleepers, using my old, cheap drill. Halfway through, the drill battery died. Charged it while I ate a sandwich and stared at the crooked mess.

Problems? Oh yeah:

  • That warped plywood? Yeah, screw heads were pullin’ down but sides were still popping up like toast.
  • Sleepers shifted. Had to crawl under the partly laid floor to shove ’em back with a crowbar.
  • Measured wrong on a cut. Had to jury-rig a thin strip of wood where I messed up. Sloppy.

Getting the Top Down

Finally got the plywood mostly flat and screwed down. Time for the real basketball flooring – tongue-and-groove stuff. Way nicer than plywood, felt fancy. Butting those planks together was like pushing magnets the wrong way. Some planks stubbornly wouldn’t sit flush.

Had to hammer the grooves with a mallet and a block of wood to jam ’em together tight. Went slow. Knee pads saved my life crawling around this thing.

Done? Kinda

Slapped on some basic finish to seal it. Looks… like a floor. Tossed my kid’s small basketball hoop on it. Kid bounced the ball… and it bounced weird. Guess those rubber sleepers absorb too much. Gotta be careful where the ball lands or it dies. Total unintended consequence.

So yeah, mission accomplished? Floor’s assembled. Looks okay from 5 feet away. Learned that rubber sleepers and bouncy balls ain’t best friends. Shoulda thought that through before buying 50 of those things. Maybe stick to plain cement for basketball next time.
