So I wanted this portable volleyball court thing for my backyard cause hosting games is fun, right? Saw folks online with fancy wooden floors that click together, but man the prices? Nope. Figured I could build something cheaper that comes apart later. Called it my removable Volleyball oak assembly wooden flooring project.

Stuff I Hunted Down First

Started running around town grabbing things:

  • Solid oak planks – thick stuff from the lumber yard, felt heavy but real wood.
  • Bunch of wood screws, heavy duty ones cause ain’t nothing falling apart on my watch.
  • Rubber anti-slip pads – these felt weirdly squishy.
  • Metal joining brackets, the kind you click together like Lego but for adults.
  • A gigantic tub of wood sealant – smelled like chemicals straight outta high school lab.
  • My trusty drill, measuring tape (always gets stuck), and sandpaper that makes your fingers itch.

The Sweaty Building Part

My garage became a sawdust nightmare. First, dragged all them oak planks onto sawhorses. Measured twice – still cut one shorter by accident. Had to run back for another plank, total pain.

Started building the frame on my driveway cause garage was packed. Screwed thick beams together first making rectangle shapes. My drill got so hot it burnt my finger. Each frame section felt solid though, like mini wrestling mats.

Next came laying the oak planks flat on those frames. Lined them up close, no gaps. Screwed every plank down hard with my screaming drill. Sawdust flew everywhere – my shirt looked like a flour bomb went off.

Sanding took forever. Rubbed every inch with rough sandpaper first, then smooth. Arms felt like noodles after. Wiped sticky sealant all over using a nasty rag. Smelled awful for two days straight – even the dog avoided the garage.

The Click-Together Magic Moment

Once sealant dried, flipped frames over and hammered those rubber pads into corners. Slapped metal brackets on the sides. Nervously tried connecting two frames.

First attempt? Messed up the bracket alignment, made this awful scraping sound. Fixed my measurements, lined them up again… and click! They locked tight like puzzle pieces. Did a little happy dance right there in the driveway!

Added the rest one by one until I had this big beautiful wood court shining in the sun. Jumped on it – bounced higher than my trampoline! Kids next door already begging to play.

Why Its Cool For Real Life

  • Tears down in 10 minutes flat – frames stack in my shed easy.
  • Oak feels crazy strong underfoot, like a real gym floor.
  • Bounce is perfect – volleyball didn’t wobble one bit during test smashes.
  • Total cost? Less than half of store-bought junk.

Learned I suck at measuring accurately. Also learned oak gets stupidly slick if it rains – gotta warn players about wet shoes! Still, best backyard project yet. Summer volleyball nights just leveled up big time.
