Starting with a wobbly dance floor dream
See, my upstairs neighbor got mad about stomping noises again. Decided to build dance-friendly flooring that I can yank out anytime. Watched some DIY videos showing interlocking wood pieces – looked easy enough for an idiot like me.

Hunting down materials
Grabbed my truck and hit the hardware store hunting for:
- Pine planks (cheapest option)
- Rubber underlay squares
- Velcro tape rolls
- Wood glue that claims “INSTANT HOLD”
The messy assembly disaster
Laid out all pine planks in my garage first evening. Measured wrong twice before finally cutting planks with my jigsaw – wood chips flying everywhere like confetti. Got glue all over my favorite jeans while attaching the rubber pads. Almost glued my hand to the floor when wiping sweat off my forehead. Smacked the pieces together like Lego blocks at 3am.
Test run chaos
Tried my disco moves next morning. First shimmy sent planks sliding apart like butter on hot pan. Whole thing buckled when attempting moonwalk. Cheap pine started splintering near the edges. Had to run to store again for more Velcro straps to reinforce connections. Damn near broke my ankle during cha-cha attempt.
Making it actually work
Ended up doing three things:
- Sandpapered every damn plank edge smooth
- Added Velcro strips perpendicular across joints
- Marked floor positions with painter’s tape
Final result?
After one busted glue gun and four Band-Aids later, I’ve got eight panels that click together in about ten minutes. Still slides a bit during intense salsa moves but holds up for normal practice. Best part? When Karen upstairs bangs her broom, I can peel up the whole dance floor in sixty seconds flat.
