Why Portable Volleyball Floor? And How I Almost Gave Up
Okay, so my buddies kept bugging me about playing volleyball, but everywhere we tried sucked. Grass? Too bumpy, ankles hate it. Sand? Can’t find a decent public court nearby. Concrete? Ouch on the knees, man. Saw these portable wooden pad floors online and thought, “Hey, maybe that’s the ticket.” Ordered a set without thinking too hard.
Unboxing Was Easier Than Actually Using It
The box arrived, smaller than I expected honestly. Dragged it out back. Opened it up – panels stacked nice and flat, some plastic edge things, connectors that looked like giant puzzle pieces. Felt pretty light lifting one panel. “This ain’t so bad,” I mumbled. Big mistake.
The First Setup: Almost Threw the Damn Things
Figured I’d try a small area first. Grabbed like 6 panels. Laid them down on the driveway. Went to push the connectors together… man those things fought back! Had to stomp on them! Literally. Used my foot and all my weight just to get one side locked. Sweat was dripping already. Took forever just to get those 6 panels locked. They were wobbling like crazy on the concrete. “This is garbage,” I almost said out loud.
Backyard Battle: Finding Flat Ground is Impossible
Wanted to move it to the backyard grass. Grass ain’t flat. Obviously. Thought, “What’s the worst that could happen?” Ha. Started laying panels on the lawn. Each panel sank differently. One corner would dip into a soft spot, the next sat high on a mound. Connected a few panels and the whole thing buckled and bent like a taco. Total nightmare. Almost quit right there. Decided brute force might help – grabbed a rake and leveled the patch of grass as best I could, stomping it down like I was killing ants. Put the panels back. Still wobbled a bit, but maybe… playable?
Finding the Sweet Spots (It Ain’t the Beach)
Tried different spots:
- Park Picnic Area (Pavement): Smooth concrete? Nope. Panels still slipped around like on ice. Needed to weigh down every edge with rocks or our cooler. Annoying.
- Grassy Field: Repeat of my backyard nightmare. Spent more time stomping grass flat than setting up.
- Dead End Street: Surprise winner! Quiet street, super smooth asphalt, easy cleanup. Just needed cones for cars. Panel locked tight on that surface.
- Community Center Parking Lot (Early Sunday): Another smooth asphalt spot. Wide open, perfect.
Setup Got Easier… After Screwing Up A Lot
Learned some painful lessons:
- Start Small, Stomp Hard: Don’t try a full court first. Make a 2×2 block tight, then build out. STOMP every connection. Like, really jump on it.
- Ground is King: Forget lumpy grass. Asphalt or concrete is your friend. Hard, flat, and the panels grip.
- Layout BEFORE Connecting: Dump all panels roughly in place first. Then connect in chunks. Way less crawling around.
- Edges Suck: Those plastic trim pieces? Useless. They pop off if you even look at them funny.
So yeah, portable volleyball floor? It’s cool once it works. But setting it up? Be ready to wrestle it. Forget fancy places. Find smooth pavement, bring sweat and maybe a mallet. Stomp hard. Then it’s volleyball time.
