Why I Decided to Build This Mess
Alright, let’s talk about my weekend project disaster turned kinda-okay: portable wooden sports flooring. Basically, I got real sick of dragging my ancient yoga mat everywhere and messing up my garage floor during workouts. Concrete ain’t kind to the knees. Saw some “professional” portable stuff online, choked on the price tag, and figured, “Heck, wood is cheap. How hard can it be?” Famous last words, right?
Getting Started & The First Hurdles
First things first: needed wood. Wandered into the big hardware store feeling optimistic. Grabbed a bunch of those 2×3 feet plywood panels – seemed about right, maybe a bit small? Also grabbed some wood screws, simple little corner brackets, and a can of varnish thinking it might make it look fancy and protect it. Yeah, optimistic.
- Took those panels home and realized my garage floor wasn’t perfectly level. Like, not even close. First dumb idea? Throw ’em straight on the floor. Stood on one… wobble city. Almost ate concrete. Lesson one: Warped floors suck.
- Next idea: Add little feet! Found some rubber cabinet bumpers in a junk drawer. Stuck ’em on the corners of one panel. Less wobble, still sketchy. Annoying.
Fumbling Towards a Solution
Went back to the store, grumbling. Found these flat plastic caps – the kind meant for furniture legs. Bought a bunch. Back home, I unscrewed the little rubber bumpers (they were already falling off anyway). Then, grabbed my power drill – honestly felt scared I’d split the thin plywood.
- Drilled pilot holes super carefully where the legs should go. Sweating bullets.
- Screwed those flat plastic feet directly into the bottom corners of each panel. Seemed okay? Tested one panel again. More stable. Wobble mostly gone unless the floor really dipped. Good enough for now.
- Needed to connect them. Pulled out the small corner brackets. Placed one bracket connecting two panels at a corner. Screwed it down… felt solid! Did this for the rest of the corners where panels met. Finally, something resembling a floor!
The Finishing Touches (Sort Of)
Okay, so I had a creaky, slightly uneven 4×6 foot floor held together by tiny metal corners. Progress! Decided to try the varnish. Slapped it on one panel outside. Waited forever for it to dry. Put my weight on it… shoes stuck slightly. Sanded it down rough like I should have done first. Applied a thinner coat. Less sticky. Gave up on a super smooth “professional” finish. Just wanted grip and some protection.
Did It Work? Would I Do It Again?
Yeah… it works? Sorta. It ain’t pretty. The joints between panels have a tiny lip you can feel under bare feet – not ideal for burpees. But it protects the garage floor! And I can actually move the pieces easily, stack them up in a corner. Worked well enough for a HIIT session yesterday. Didn’t collapse! Small wins.
The biggest surprise? Those flimsy corner brackets actually held. Didn’t think they had it in ’em. But honestly, next time? I might just suck it up and buy bigger panels. Or maybe thicker wood. This was a lot of fiddling for a slightly janky result. But hey, it’s MY slightly janky result. #DIYFail #WorkoutHack #GoodEnough
