Getting the Idea

So last month my neighbor’s kid kept bugging me about setting up a volleyball net in their yard. Problem was their ground sucked – full of rocks and bumps. Started thinking about portable floors after seeing those interlocking gym tiles at the rec center.

Ordering Process

Went online hunting for thick rubbery tiles. Found these 1-inch thick ones supposedly good for outdoor sports. Took forever comparing prices – almost choked seeing some “pro” systems costing like a used car. Ended up ordering 200 square feet of reversible grey/blue tiles from this warehouse deal.

Prep Work Sucked

Biggest hassle was prepping the dirt patch. Had to:

  • Rent a roller from Home Depot to flatten the ground
  • Pull out like a hundred dandelions
  • Lay weed barrier fabric (ants got in my pants doing this part)

Assembly Chaos

When the shipment came, these tiles smelled like burnt tires. My dog wouldn’t stop sniffing them. Actually snapping them together was easier than IKEA furniture though. Pro tip:

  • Start from the center outwards
  • Keep a rubber mallet handy for stubborn edges
  • Cut border pieces with regular saw

Test Run Surprises

First time playing on it was wild. Good stuff:

  • No ankle rolls on dives
  • Ball bounced true every time

Annoying things:

  • Sweaty feet stick to rubber sometimes
  • Rain makes it slippery as ice
  • Neighbor’s dog tried burying bones under corners

Final Thoughts

Spent about two weekends total on this project. Honestly overkill for casual play but if you’re serious about home volleyball, it beats destroying your lawn. Might add sandbags on edges later. Kids use it as dance floor when not volleying – guess that’s bonus points.
