So last weekend I finally tackled that portable sport flooring project for my nephew’s school event. Took way more trial and error than I expected honestly. Here’s how it went down blow-by-blow.
The Stupid Idea Strikes
First, my sister calls begging for help because the school’s basketball court got double-booked. Needs something quick and cheap for the kids’ relay races outdoors. I’m sitting there staring at my garage full of junk thinking… portable floor? Sure, how hard could it be? Famous last words.
Picking Pieces Like a Dummy
Wandered into the hardware store feeling confident. Immediately got overwhelmed. Grabbed:
- Those foam exercise mats everyone has because they were cheap
- A giant roll of duct tape thinking it would hold anything
- Non-slip rug pads to stop sliding
- Cheapo outdoor carpet remnants for “traction”
Already spent like 50 bucks. Should’ve quit while I was ahead.
The First Disaster Attempt
Laid out the foam mats on my driveway first. Taped the edges together like a maniac. Threw the rug pads on top and it looked like Frankenstein’s floor. Stepped on it… and my foot sank right between two mats. Tape peeled right off. Useless.
Tried putting the outdoor carpet ON the foam next. Bigger mistake. Kids testing it slid everywhere like it was ice. Nearly took out my neighbor’s trash cans.
Swearing and Starting Over
Almost gave up. Searched online angrily at midnight. Realized two things:
Foam is garbage for anything active, and duct tape hates weather. Duh.
Next day went back to the store. Returned the stupid rug pads. Bought:
- Interlocking plastic tiles (marked “heavy duty” – cost way more)
- Rubber border pieces
- Industrial Velcro straps (the chunky kind)
My wallet cried.
Assembly Without Losing My Mind
Cleared the whole driveway. Started clicking those plastic tiles together like giant, sweaty LEGOs. Way sturdier than foam. Put a rubber border all the way around the edges to lock everything in tight. No more tripping gaps.
Used the heavy-duty Velcro straps every few feet underneath, connecting tiles across rows. This stopped the whole thing from sliding apart when kids ran on it. Probably used too much Velcro, but screw it – wasn’t risking failure again.
Does it Actually Work?
Roped in every kid on the block to test it. Jumping, sprinting, cartwheels (don’t ask). Held up! A couple tiles popped near the corners when someone landed weird, but clicked ’em back easy. No wipeouts. Actual minor victory.
Dismantled the whole thing in about 10 minutes. Stacked the tiles, rolled up the borders and straps. Fit it all in my trunk. Felt ridiculously smug.
Aftermath Thoughts
My takeaways? Real simple:
- Cheap stuff fails fast. Spend on proper tiles.
- Velcro > Duct Tape outdoors. Every single time.
- Let kids try to destroy it before showtime.
School event happened last night. No calls from my sister. No crying kids. Assume it worked. Might actually use this setup again… after my wallet recovers.
