So my basement floor is concrete, right? Hurts like crazy when I dive during home volleyball practice. Saw “Pad Volleyball Hard Timber Reviews” pop up online, figured perfect solution. Grabbed the top 3 marketed woods everyone pushes.

Getting the Wood Samples

Ordered small planks advertised for volleyball padding: dense Maple from “Brand A”, supposedly tough Oak from “Brand B”, and light, bouncy Bamboo from “Brand C”. Showed up fast, looked fancy. Brand C even had a glossy finish. Thought, “This’ll feel pro!”

The Setup & First Tries

Cleared a corner basement spot. Laid each plank flat on the concrete. Wore volleyball kneepads anyway – not stupid. Started with Brand A (Maple). Dropped into a kneel… Ouch! Felt harder than my damn kitchen counter. Bounced a volleyball on it – sounded like hitting concrete anyway. Total letdown.

Tried Brand B (Oak) next. Slightly softer than Maple? Maybe. But bending low for a dig? Nope. Felt my hipbone thudding against solid wood. Smacking the ball left bruises on my arm after a few minutes. Serves as gym cushion? Not even.

Finally Brand C (Bamboo). Lightweight, looked promising. Actually had some tiny bounce! Felt… not like concrete? But after 10 minutes of light drills? The finish scuffed off instantly. Bamboo surface started feeling rough. Little splinters poking out near the edges. Dropped a medium weight on it later – heard a faint crack. Wasted potential.

What Actually Worked (Sort Of)

  • Threw gym tiles over everything: Yeah, those cheap foam squares people use? Covered the wood planks. Instant difference. Knees stopped screaming.
  • Ditched the planks entirely later: Realized the foam alone worked better. Less slip, more give. Who knew?
  • Brands wasted my cash: Maple? Hardwood. Oak? Harder wood. Bamboo? Pretty. None meant for padding volleyball dives. They sell it though.

The Reality Check

Big brands selling wood planks as “volleyball pads” felt like a con job. Pretty wood ≠ functional padding. Learned:

  • Dense wood absorbs nothing
  • Thin planks just crack under impact
  • All of them needed extra cushioning anyway

Finished practice on foam tiles alone. Felt ridiculous stacking wood samples that did squat. Save your money. Skip the “hard timber” volleyball padding nonsense. Big brands pushing it? Not impressed.
