So last weekend I woke up itching to try something wild – turning my boring living room into a temporary dance pad space. Saw folks online doing these cool moves they call pad dancing, right? But slamming feet on hard tile just hurts. Needed a sprung floor, those fancy studios got ’em, but me? Budget’s tight.

Digging Around the Garage

First thing I did was rummage through my garage mess. Found these leftover oak laminate planks from that half-finished basement job last year. Thick stuff, about 12mm. Grabbed maybe twelve pieces, brushed off the dust. Looked okay, no huge cracks. Figured, why not? Free is my favorite price.

Fitting the Puzzle Together

Dragged them planks inside. No fancy click-lock tongues left on these, edges were rough. My solution? Gorilla Glue and desperation. Slapped that glue like frosting on a cake along the long edge of one plank. Pressed the next one tight against it. Hard. Used those big F-clamps I had – cranked ’em shut so hard the wood kinda groaned. Repeated this torture, plank after plank. Took forever waiting for the glue to grab. Got impatient? Yeah. Sat on them for good measure. Butt weight works.

Ended up with this glued-up monster slab:

  • Roughly 1.8 meters long
  • Just under a meter wide
  • Corners looking seriously janky
  • Glue squeezing out like gross white worms

The Reality Check Moment

Once the glue felt solid, I pushed the whole thing onto the tile floor. Slid it around. Big mistake. Heard this awful grinding screech. Tilted it up – saw deep scratches on my nice tile. Heart sank a bit. Whoops. Lesson learned: gotta protect the floor underneath. Threw down an old yoga mat under it next time. Better? Sorta.

Tried a basic shuffle step. Initial feel? Surprisingly okay! Wood gave a little bounce, way better than slamming on stone. But…

  • The noise was insane. Every scrape, every stomp echoed.
  • One plank edge lifted slightly under my heel – trip hazard city.
  • Moving this heavy glued-up beast? Forget it. It’s not “portable,” it’s back-breaking.

Final Thoughts? Mixed Bag.

Did it work for dancing? Kinda. Got spring, sure. But the headaches? Bigger. If your space ain’t a permanent studio, lugging this around sucks. Scratched my floor. Made noise pollution. And honestly? Felt kinda cheap and ugly. Fun experiment? Yeah, maybe. Practical solution? Nah. Back to the garage it goes, probably for good. Maybe stick to rugs next time.
