The Big Idea Strikes

So yeah, yesterday I got this itch, right? Saw a video online of folks doing these super smooth moves on a wooden floor with socks. Called Pad Dancing. Looked wicked cool. Immediately thought, “My basement concrete slab is begging for this!” But needed wood on top, obviously.

Jumped in the car, drove over to the big hardware store downtown. Wandered the flooring section feeling kinda lost. Oak? Bamboo? Nah. Then spotted it: Maple. Beautiful grain, looked tough. The sign even said “hard maple” – sounded perfect for stomping around. Grabbed a bunch of boxes. Totally eyeballed the square footage. Bad idea.

Turns Out Math is Hard

Got home, cleared the basement space. Swept it roughly. Tossed down that spongy, foamy underpad stuff – helps with cushion and noise apparently. Unboxed the first planks. Felt good, solid. Nice clicky bits on the sides.

Started laying them down, click-click, snug against each other. Felt like a pro for like ten minutes. Hammered in the little tapping block thingy to get them tight. Used my knee pads – smart move, saved my old knees big time.

Made it halfway across the room… Cold Sweat Time. Counted the planks left in the boxes. Did some frantic mental math. Then grabbed a tape measure. Yep. Disaster. Short by a whole dang box worth. Forgot about the stupid cuts for the last row. Felt like a total idiot.

  • Rushed Buying: Got excited, bought less than needed. Classic me.
  • Poor Measuring: Did it in my head? Why???
  • Forgot Wastage: You always need extra for cuts!

Panic Mode & The Hack

Couldn’t face another trip to the store. Basement was half done and looking sad. Stared at the leftover pile. Had some bits from near the wall where I cut off lengths. Not enough for full rows.

Got desperate. Said “screw it.” Started mixing the leftover pieces. Laid some going left-right in the gap instead of the main front-back direction. Used extra foamy stuff underneath the small pieces. Jammed them in tight. Total Frankenstein patchwork, but it covered the concrete.

The First Dance Test

Sweaty, covered in sawdust, and slightly embarrassed, I cleared the tools. Put on thick socks.

Stepped onto the maple. Felt instantly different – warmer, smoother than concrete. Tried a simple slide move.

Oh man, GLORIOUS. Socks on maple is like butter. That slide was effortless! Did a little spin. Planks felt solid underfoot, no creaking (yet!). Even the patchy corner held up fine when I stomped over it.

So yeah, looks kinda weird up close near the washer thanks to my patch job, like some weird modern art floor installation. But it works! Slides are smooth, spins are possible, basement is way warmer and nicer looking. Won’t win any design contests, but for pad dancing? Totally nailed the important part. Lesson learned: Buy way extra wood next time.
