Starting This Pad Dancing Floor Project

Alright so last week my kid kept tripping over cracks in our garage concrete floor during dance practice. Told myself enough is enough – time for portable wooden flooring. Looked up some DIY videos online but honestly, most were way too complicated for me.

Went to the local hardware store and grabbed stuff blind:

  • Six packs of those click-lock maple panels
  • A giant roll of black foam underlay
  • Two tubes of wood glue
  • Measuring tape and rubber mallet

The Messy Installation Process

First mistake: didn’t clear enough space. Had to shove two bikes and a lawnmower into the driveway. Unrolled the foam underlay and cut it crooked with kitchen scissors – whatever, nobody sees it anyway. Started clicking panels together like the video showed. Whacked em hard with the rubber mallet like hammering nails.

Reality check came quick. Some boards wouldn’t lock right, left these annoying gaps. Squirted half a glue tube into the cracks like cake frosting. Bigger problem happened when my foot went straight through a weak spot near the edge – that board snapped like a twig.

Finishing This Disaster

After three hours sweating:

  • Five slightly bent panels
  • Glue fingerprints everywhere
  • A blue paint stain from leaning on the wall

Told the kids it’s now their “professional dance pad”. They tried pirouetting and the whole thing slid like ice on the foam. Had to duct-tape the edges to the concrete floor. Looks trashy but hey, no more scraped knees. If you try this, bring more patience than I did.
