Alright folks, finally got that stubborn maple flooring in the front room down! Been itching to try this pad dancing method everyone’s hyping up online.

Here’s the messy play-by-play:

The Starting Point & Supplies

Woke up early, determined. Hauled all those maple plank boxes in – heavier than they look, damn right I broke a sweat. Dumped everything right in the middle of the room I was gonna floor. Needed the space. Grabbed my knee pads (smartest move ever), tapping block, pull bar, spacers, measuring tape, pencil, utility knife. Forgot the mallet downstairs… typical. Had to pause already.

Prep Sucks, But Do It

Swept the heck out of that subfloor. Found dust bunnies the size of actual bunnies hiding in the corners. Then laid out that spongy underpad – the “dancing” part. Rolled it out, trying to keep it flat without wrinkles. Used the utility knife to trim around the edges and doorways. Knife blade got dull stupid fast.

Let The Plank Parade Begin

Started in the corner everyone says to start in – longest wall with no obstructions. Plonked down the first plank. Gentle on it. Slid those little spacers between the plank and the wall, all down the first row. Kept checking with the tape measure – didn’t wanna drift crooked. Started clicking the second plank into the first one. Angled it, pushed down. Heard that satisfying snap. Felt smug for like two seconds.

Kept going down the first row. Had to cut the last plank. Measured twice (didn’t wanna wreck expensive maple), marked it with the pencil, whacked it good with the mallet on the cut line. Worked! Clean break.

The “Dance” Gets Real

Second row… this is where the “dancing” came in. Planks gotta stagger at least 6 inches. Found a shorter piece for the start. Clicked the long edge into the first row. Then came the fun part for the short end. Can’t just whack the top. Had to use that stupid tapping block against the tongue. Knelt down, banged that block sideways with the mallet. Repeated for every damn piece. Knee pads earned their keep.

  • Angle: Lift the new plank maybe 30 degrees.
  • Slide: Wiggle the tongue into the groove of the laid plank.
  • Bang: Slam the tapping block with the mallet towards the plank already down to close the gap tight.

Worked across the room, row after row. Felt like doing a slow-motion crab walk, muttering curses when a spacer popped out. Had to cut planks around a doorway. Sweating buckets trying to trace the curve on the plank. Cut it too short first try. Annoying.

Stubborn Last Rows

Getting near the opposite wall, space got tight. Couldn’t angle the planks anymore. Enter the pull bar. Stick it against the plank, banged the hell outta the pull bar with the mallet. Felt like hammering metal. Took muscle! Squeezed that final row in tight against the spacers on the far wall. Pulled the spacers out from the starting wall. Ahhh.

Done Deal

Stepped back. Whole room covered in that nice maple. Feels smooth underfoot. Used a rubber mallet, so no dents. Looks good. Looks damn good. Took way longer than I thought it would. Knees feel ancient. Would I pad dance maple again? Maybe. With bigger knee pads.
