Starting the Dance Floor Project

So I decided to build a dance pad with maple wood flooring pieces. Saw this idea online and thought why not try it myself? Went to the local hardware store last Tuesday morning. Got some maple planks that were already cut to size – thank god because I suck at measuring.

Brought everything to my garage workspace. First thing? Unpacked all the wood pieces and spread them on the floor. Checked each one for cracks or splinters. Had to sand down three rough edges using my old electric sander. Man that dust got everywhere!

The Assembly Tango

Started connecting them like puzzle pieces. These had tongue-and-groove edges so you just:

  • Slid the tongues into the grooves at an angle
  • Pressed down hard till they clicked
  • Used rubber mallet for stubborn pieces

Halfway through I realized the pattern looked crooked. Panicked for five minutes before noticing I’d put piece #7 upside down. Flipped it and boom – everything lined up smooth.

Finishing Touches

Added non-slip pads to the corners. Tested the whole thing by jumping around like crazy. Held up perfectly! Last step was wiping the surface with wood cleaner. That maple grain really popped when it got shiny.

Honestly thought I’d mess this up but turned out awesome. Whole project took about four hours start to finish. Pro tip? Buy extra pieces – I broke two during trial runs.
