Okay folks, today’s mess project was putting down that “pad dancing hard” assembled wooden flooring. Yeah, the kind that clicks together. Looked easy in the store picture. Reality? Different story.
The Box Mountain Arrives
First thing, those boxes show up. Heavy. So. Many. Boxes. I lug ’em all into the living room, stacking ’em like some weird cardboard fortress. Already sweating. Opened up box one – planks looked nice, smelled like… wood. Good sign? Thought so then.
The Pad Goes Down… Mostly
Laid out that foam pad they give you. Unrolled it across the floor, trying to smoosh it flat. Cut bits with old scissors where it met door frames. Pretty smooth, actually. Felt like the one easy win of the day.
Then Came Clicking Chaos
Time to start snapping planks. First row, okay. Lined it up against the wall with those little spacer things. Had to cut the last plank. Measured, marked with a pencil, hauled out the hand saw. Made the cut. Fit. Felt proud.
Second row. Tried angling the plank into the groove like the video said. Tapped it gently with the rubber mallet. Nothing. Nudged it harder. Still nothing. Put some real elbow grease into it – SMACK! Finally clicked, but almost sent the first row flying. Did this for maybe the next five planks.
Then hit a wall. Or rather, a plank that refused to cooperate. The groove just wouldn’t engage the tongue right. Tried lifting, angling, hammering, cursing. Ended up standing on the stupid thing, doing this weird shuffle-dance-jiggle while pushing down with all my weight. Hence the “pad dancing hard” bit. Honestly, felt like an idiot. But… it clicked. Mostly.
Kept going. Rows three, four, five…
- Cutting planks near the wall got trickier.
- Spacers kept falling over.
- Sawdust everywhere.
- My knees started complaining big time.
Constantly checking if things were straight. Spoiler: sometimes they weren’t. Had to pull rows apart. More dancing. More smacking.
The Home Stretch (And Blisters)
Getting to the last row was the worst. Had to measure and cut super skinny strips for each plank to fit against the far wall. Tedious. And getting those last few pieces to click in under the door frames? Pure frustration gymnastics. Involved a pry bar, the mallet, and probably some forbidden leverage techniques. My hands were wrecked.
Finished… Sort Of
When the final piece slapped in? Sweet relief. Took out the spacers. Swept up mountains of sawdust. Walked on it. Felt solid! Mostly flat! Looked… okay.
But man, is it perfect? Heck no.
- There’s a few gaps that bug me.
- Near the closet door, it’s ever so slightly crooked but only I probably notice.
- My back is yelling at me.
- I smell like sweat and pine.
Final thoughts? Looks way better than the old carpet. Feels nice underfoot. Took way longer and was way harder than that dude in the youtube video made it seem. Am I glad I did it myself? Mostly. Would I do it again? Hmmm… ask me after a hot shower and a cold drink. Maybe a six-pack. It’s in. That’s the main thing.
