Alright, gotta share this dumb floor thing I tackled last weekend. Wanted a smooth spot for those dance apps on the pad, y’know? Living room carpet just wasn’t cutting it anymore – kept tripping over lumps.

Found the Stuff and Tools

First things first, raided the local hardware joint. Found some pre-finished birch planks. Looked tough enough. Grabbed a bunch of other crap too:

  • Rubber underlayment rolls (heard this stops the floor from bouncing)
  • Measuring tape (duh)
  • Utility knife and cutting mat (for hacking up the underlay)
  • Tapping block and pull bar (banged into these)
  • Spacers (those little plastic bits that keep the planks off the wall)
  • Rubber mallet (for persuading stubborn wood)
  • Saw (borrowed the neighbour’s jigsaw, nearly cut my thumb off)

Clearing the Junk Out

Cleared all the furniture off to the sides. Swept the heck out of the old subfloor underneath – dust bunnies the size of rabbits. Felt kinda gross. Laid down the underlay stuff, rolling it out flat side up like the instructions said. Taped the seams together with this weird sticky tape it came with. Looked like duct tape.

Starting the Planks

Got serious now. Placed the first plank groove-side towards the wall. Jammed spacers between the plank and every wall it touched – maybe used too many, who knows? Wanted room for it to swell. Laid the second plank end-to-end on the first row. Tapped them together nice and snug with the block and mallet. Thump thump thump. Had that satisfying click sound.

Staggering Like a Drunk

Figured I shouldn’t line up all the seams. Looked weak. So for row two, cut a plank roughly in thirds – measured wrong the first time, nearly wasted a piece. Used the short end to start the row, making sure the ends overlapped the seams below by at least a foot. Clicked the long side groove onto the tongue of the first row. More tapping. Felt like a caveman hitting stuff. Rinse and repeat. My knees started bitching halfway through.

Cutting Around Obstacles

Ran into the radiator pipe. Total pain. Measured where it needed to go, marked it on a plank, drilled a starter hole with a bit slightly bigger than the pipe, then jigsawed out the curve. Turned out jagged as heck, but hey, the little cover thing hid it later.

Final Squeeze

Last row was the worst. Had to rip planks lengthwise on the neighbour’s jigsaw. Sweaty palms time. Measured super careful, marked the cut line. Used the pull bar and mallet to hammer it sideways into the tongue of the last installed row. So. Much. Hammering. Got the spacers out finally.

The Dance Test

Stepped back. Actually looked kinda decent! Swept up the sawdust mess. Plugged the pad back in, fired up the dumb dance app. Socks on… first shuffle slide…wow! Glided smooth as ice. No bumps, no catches. Kids ran out later and slid all the way across it like idiots. Floor held up. Worth the kneepain and near-thumb-loss. Feels solid underfoot now.
