Getting Started
So I saw these birch wood planks on clearance sale last Tuesday. Thought hell why not, always wanted that wooden floor look. Dragged my buddy Dave to help haul ten boxes to my basement den. Each box had these click-lock planks smelling like fresh lumber and promises.
The Setup Mess
First we ripped out that ugly carpet. Underneath was concrete with crumbs and mystery stains. Swept till my back hurt then unrolled that foam pad stuff. Got all fancy cutting it around pipes – ruined two utility knives doing that. Dave’s smoking while watching me struggle, useless.
Assembly Dance Party
Started laying planks near the longest wall. These tongue-and-groove things click together when you angle them right. Key move: You gotta shimmy sideways like dancing to lock them tight. Did this weird hip-bump wiggle on each plank. Dave laughed till he choked then finally helped. Dropped like ten planks trying to keep rows straight. Edges kept flaring up like stubborn toast.
- Had to whack stubborn pieces with rubber mallet
- Tripped over pad wrinkles twice
- Split three planks hammering too hard
The Final Stretch
Last row needed crazy skinny cuts. Borrowed neighbor’s saw – made dusty snowstorm in my garage. Fit the final piece at 2AM sweating glue and sawdust. Floor looked gorgeous until sunlight hit it next morning. Notice four planks going opposite direction like morons pointing wrong way. Dave swears it was my “dancing”. Whatever. Still pretty damn satisfied walking barefoot on birch now.
