Prepping the Space

First thing I did was clear out my entire living room. Had to move the couch, coffee table, even that dusty old bookshelf. Swept the concrete subfloor like crazy cause any little pebble would mess things up later.

Checked the moisture levels with my cheapo meter from the hardware store. Last thing I wanted was swollen planks after all this work. Took me three damn hours just to get everything level using that self-leveling compound stuff – what a messy job.

The Underpad Tango

Unrolled that foam underpad across the whole floor. Sounds easy but man, cutting it straight around door frames? Used my crappy utility knife and went through like five blades. Taped the seams with that weird silver tape that never sticks right. Knees were already killing me.

Big mistakes I almost made:

  • Almost forgot the expansion gap near the walls
  • Almost started laying parallel to the shortest wall (dumb!)
  • Measured once and cut twice like an idiot

The Dance Floor Action

Started laying planks from the corner. Here’s where the “pad dancing” magic happened. Had to carefully angle each plank down onto the groove, then tap-tap-tap along the edge with my rubber mallet. Felt like playing whack-a-mole sometimes!

When I got to the stubborn pieces? Oh boy. Had to do this whole press-and-shimmy move with my knee and both hands while whispering “please click you bastard”. Wore my grippiest socks cause regular shoes would scratch the planks.

Cutting Nightmares

The power saw terrified me. Made a jig out of scrap wood after nearly ruining three beech planks. That final row against the wall? Ended up tracing the contour on cardboard first like some kindergarten art project. Still had to shave off slivers four times before it fit.

Final Moves

Popped in those last transition strips near the hallway – bent the molding with my bare hands like the YouTube tutorials said. Thought I’d break them for sure. Threw down the area rug immediately after finishing cause I spotted two tiny scratches from when I dropped the mallet.

Whole project took two full weekends and my back’s still sore. But drinking coffee barefoot on that smooth beech surface this morning? Felt like dancing on clouds. Next time though… maybe I’ll just hire someone.
