So I’ve been wanting a dance pad for ages but those official ones cost a fortune. Saw some folks online making DIY pads from wood, figured I could do that too. Beech wood popped up cause it’s tough enough to stomp on but not crazy heavy.
Gathering Stuff
First thing, I dragged myself to the hardware store and got:
- A big beech wood board, about an inch thick
- Sandpaper packs in three different roughness levels
- Non-slip rubber sheet stuff like they use in toolboxes
- Wood glue and some corner braces for joints
Cutting & Sanding Chaos
Measured the pad size on the wood with a pencil – 3 feet by 3 feet cause my living room ain’t huge. Sawing that thick wood killed my arms. Got all shaky midway through one cut so now there’s this slightly crooked edge. Whatever, adds character.
Spent ages sanding every surface. Started rough, moved to finer paper. My garage looked like a sawdust blizzard hit it. Tip: wear goggles – I learned that when a wood chunk flew straight at my eye.
Portable Trick
Whole point was making it movable. Chopped the big board into four square panels that lock together with finger joints. Looked like puzzle pieces when dry-fit. Used corner braces underneath with wood glue just in case.
Testing Day Disaster
Threw the rubber sheet on top for grip… first spin kick sent it sliding across the garage like a hockey puck. Almost ate concrete. Ended up stapling that sucker down along every edge like a maniac. Works perfectly now – stomp all you want, no slippage.
Final result? Beats paying $200 for a brand name pad. It’s heavy but manageable, fits in my trunk, and survived my clumsy shuffling. Knees don’t ache like when dancing on concrete. Worth every blister.
