I thought it would be a good idea to build a basketball pad in my backyard, focusing on the wooden flooring because I wanted something solid for shooting hoops. I saw some videos online about sleeper assemblies, so I gave it a try over the weekend.
Getting Stuff Ready
First off, I headed to the hardware store down the street. Grabbed pressure-treated wood for the sleepers and planks – figured it would last longer outside. Also picked up screws, a drill, a saw, and a measuring tape. Didn’t want to forget anything, but almost left the level behind. Lucky I checked twice!
Setting Up the Area
I cleared a spot in my yard, sweeping away all the leaves and dirt. Measured out a 10×10 foot area with stakes and string. Used the measuring tape to make sure it was even, but messed up the corners once. Had to redo it, which took extra time. Started laying down the gravel base to prevent weeds, spreading it roughly with a shovel.
Assembling the Sleepers
Cut the sleepers to size using the saw – man, that thing was loud and dusty. Got four pieces ready and placed them around the perimeter. Used the drill to screw them together at the corners. Kept checking the level because it kept wobbling. After a few adjustments, it felt sturdy. Felt pretty proud of myself, even though I dripped sweat all over the place.
Adding the Wooden Flooring
Next up, I laid out the wooden planks across the sleepers. Cut each plank to fit the frame with the saw, one by one. Screwed them down tight with the drill, making sure no gaps were left. Took forever and my back started aching. Sanded the surface smooth to avoid splinters – that part was dusty too. Applied a coat of sealant with a brush to protect it from rain. By the end, my hands were sticky and tired.
Wrapping It Up
Once everything dried, I tossed a basketball on it. Kids came out to try it and they loved the bounce. But looking back, I should have made it bigger – space feels tight now. Also learned: measure twice, cut once, or you’ll waste wood like I did. Overall, it works great, but I won’t be doing another one anytime soon!
