Starting This Messy Project

Alright so I needed new flooring for my garage gym. Thought about those fancy rubber tiles first, but damn those prices hurt my wallet. Saw maple sports floors online, felt confused as hell. How hard could wood floors be? Spoiler: real damn hard.

Grabbing Supplies Like a Rookie

Went to Home Depot thinking I’d just grab maple planks. Employee asks “solid or engineered?” I just stared like an idiot. Ended up buying cheap unfinished maple planks because the pre-finished ones cost twice as much. Got varnish, underlayment foam, and borrowed my neighbor’s rusty nail gun.

  • Step 1: Swept garage concrete like crazy
  • Step 2: Rolled out that foam underlayment – rips easy as wet paper
  • Step 3: Started laying planks crooked somehow? First row looked like drunken snakes

The Nail Gun Disaster

Tried using that ancient nail gun – blew three nails straight through planks. Wood split like crackers. Wasted like 7 planks before figuring out the pressure settings. Hands shaking, sweat dripping everywhere. Those DIY videos make this look stupid easy but real life ain’t YouTube.

Ran out of planks by day two. Had to drive back to store covered in sawdust looking homeless. Sales dude actually laughed at me. Bought extra planks this time and splurged on knee pads.

Varnish Armageddon

After finally nailing down all planks, applied varnish with roller. Looked beautiful wet… dried like streaky cat vomit. Sanded everything down again, turned garage into snow globe of maple dust. Second coat: bugs landed everywhere while drying. Picked out wings and legs with tweezers like a crazy person.

Final Result (Kinda)

Got it sorta level after 4 weekends. Still dips near squat rack. Dropped 45lb plate today – no cracks at least! But spilled pre-workout on it and the stain came up like magic ink. Gotta spot-sand and re-varnish tomorrow. My back hates me but damn, saved $3k doing it myself.

Would I recommend? Only if you enjoy pain. Next time? Probably just buying those damn rubber tiles.
