Okay, here’s my blog post about putting together that portable wooden volleyball court floor:

Alright, so I decided to tackle this project – a portable wooden volleyball court floor. Sounds fancy, huh? It kinda was, but mostly it was just a lot of measuring, cutting, and hoping I didn’t mess up too badly.

Getting Started

First things first, I needed the wood. And not just any wood, I needed the good stuff that wouldn’t splinter the first time someone dove for a ball. I opted for oak because, well, it sounds tough. Also, the internet said it was good for this kind of thing.

Then came the keel, the support structure. That needed to be strong and, well, portable. I thought for about an hour while I paced around.

The Build

  • Measuring Mayhem:I got out my tape measure and started marking things up. I needed to figure out how big I wanted this thing to be. Let me tell you, measuring a big space with a small tape measure is a workout in itself. Lots of squats.
  • Cutting Chaos:Time to cut the wood. I dusted off my trusty circular saw (okay, it wasn’t that trusty, it was kinda wobbly) and started slicing. Note to self: sawdust gets everywhere. Wear a mask, people!
  • Assembling the Keel:I started to assemble the support pieces, I used some heavy-duty wood glue and screws. I felt pretty accomplished, watching these pieces come together. It actually started to look like something!
  • The Floor Boards:Next, I laid down the oak boards on top of the keel. This was the moment of truth. Would they fit? Would they be level? Would they look like a total disaster? It was a bit of all three, to be honest. There was some… adjusting… involved.

Finishing Touches and Realization

After a lot of sweat and maybe a few tears (don’t judge), I had a (mostly) flat, (mostly) level, portable wooden volleyball court floor. I stained it, added a protective coat, and stood back to admire my handiwork. Then finally, I realized how heavy it was. It’s “portable” in the sense that it can be moved, but it definitely requires at least two strong people. But, after some good effort, it was done. It was not easy, but I was proud of it.

In Conclusion. Would I do it again? Maybe. But next time, I’m definitely calling a friend (or three) to help.
