Okay, so today I tackled a project I’ve been putting off – assembling some keel volleyball plywood flooring. It’s not as glamorous as some DIY stuff, but hey, a guy needs a decent floor for his makeshift indoor practice area, right?
Getting Started
First things first, I gathered all my materials. I had these big sheets of plywood specifically designed for this kind of thing, with these interlocking edges. I also had a bunch of wooden keels – basically long strips of wood that act as supports underneath. And, of course, my trusty toolbox.
The Keel Deal
The first real step was laying out the keels. I wanted to make sure they were evenly spaced to distribute the weight properly. This part was kind of like putting together a giant puzzle, only less colorful and more splinters. I measured everything out multiple times because, you know, measure twice, cut once…or in this case, measure twice, screw once.
I placed them carefully on the ground.I double-checked, used a level to make sure, and adjusted some of them.
Plywood Power
- Next up, I started placing the plywood sheets on top of the keels.
- These things were heavy, let me tell you. It’s definitely a two-person job if you can swing it, but I was flying solo today.
- The interlocking edges were a lifesaver, though. They clicked together pretty easily, which was a relief. I just lined them up and gave them a good whack with a rubber mallet to make sure they were snug.
Securing the Situation
Once I had a section of plywood down, I grabbed my drill and some screws. I screwed the plywood into the keels, making sure to sink the screws just below the surface so they wouldn’t be a tripping hazard. I did this over and over, panel by panel, until the whole area was covered.
Finishing Touches
Finally, it is finished.I swept up all the sawdust and wood scraps. Then, I just stood back and admired my handiwork. It wasn’t perfect – a few of the seams weren’t quite flush, and I definitely had a few sore muscles – but it was a solid, usable floor.
So, there you have it. My adventure in plywood flooring. Not the most exciting story, but a good day’s work nonetheless. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go practice my serves.
