Okay, so today was a bit of a construction day for me. I’ve been meaning to get this done for ages, and I finally got around to assembling this keel, dancing engineer board… thing… for my new wooden flooring. It’s not as fancy as it sounds, trust me.
First, I gathered all the bits and pieces. I had these long wooden pieces, which I guess are the “keels,” and then a bunch of shorter boards that, when put together, will make up the actual floor. I also had a box of screws, my trusty drill, and a measuring tape. I always make sure I have everything at hand. It saves me from running back and forth.
Getting Started
I started by laying out the keel pieces on the floor, spacing them out evenly. This is important because they’re the support for the whole floor, so they need to be straight and level. I used my measuring tape to ensure the spaces are the same.
Then, I took the first of the shorter boards and placed it across the keels. This is where things got a little tricky. I had to make sure the board was flush with the edges of the keels. A little bit of wiggling was necessary.
The Fun Part (Kind Of)
Now for the drilling! I pre-drilled some holes through the board and into the keels, just to make things easier. Then, I grabbed my drill and screwed the board into place. One down, a whole bunch more to go!
- Repeat, repeat, repeat. That’s pretty much the rest of the process. Lay a board, pre-drill, screw it in.
- It’s kind of monotonous, but also kind of satisfying to see the floor slowly taking shape.
- I took a few breaks here and there. My back was starting to ache, and I needed to refill my coffee cup a couple of times.
Almost There!
After a few hours, I finally finished assembling the whole thing. It looks pretty good, if I do say so myself. It’s not perfect, there are a few gaps here and there, but it’s solid and sturdy. More important, it can work!
Next step is to actually lay the flooring on top of this frame. But that’s a project for another day. I’m pretty wiped out after all that drilling and screwing. Time for a well-deserved rest!
