Alright, guys, let’s talk about my little weekend project: putting down some “keel dancing birch assembled wooden flooring”. Sounds fancy, huh? It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, though.
Getting Started
First, I cleared out the room. Everything had to go. Furniture, rugs, the whole nine yards. This gave me a blank canvas to work with. Then, I gave the subfloor a good sweep and made sure it was level. A few spots needed a bit of sanding down, but nothing major.
Laying the Underlayment
Next up was the underlayment. This stuff is like a cushion for the flooring, and it helps with soundproofing too. I rolled it out across the floor, making sure to overlap the seams a bit. Then, I taped those seams down with some good, strong tape. You don’t want this stuff shifting around later.
The Fun Part: Flooring!
Now for the actual flooring. I started in one corner, laying down the first plank. This “keel dancing” stuff is supposed to be pretty easy to install because of the way the planks connect. And yeah, it was. Basically, you just angle one plank into the other and push it down. You hear a little “click,” and you know it’s locked in.
- Line up the edges.
- Angle the plank.
- Push down until it clicks.
I kept going like that, row by row, across the room. Sometimes I needed to cut a plank to fit, especially around doorways and corners. A simple saw did the trick, just measure twice, cut once. It is a golden rule. I used to be a mess at cutting, but I’ve gotten better now, haha.
Finishing Touches
Once all the flooring was down, I installed some baseboards around the edges of the room. This hides the gaps between the flooring and the walls and gives it a nice, finished look. Nailed those in, filled the nail holes with some wood filler, and then a quick coat of paint to match the walls.
The Result
And that’s it! Honestly, it took me a good chunk of the weekend, but it was totally worth it. The room looks completely different, and the new floor feels great underfoot. Plus, I saved a bunch of money by doing it myself. Would I do it again? Maybe. It was satisfying, but my back is definitely feeling it today!
