Okay folks, so you know I’m always messing around with practical gear stuff, right? Got my hands on this portable wooden volleyball court flooring thing – the pad volleyball birch kind they advertise as super tough. Wanted to see if it really lasts or just talks big. Here’s exactly how it went down.
Getting Started
First off, I grabbed one of these birch floors online. Picture looked real nice, all smooth wood panels clicking together. Box showed up kinda beaten though – shipping guys clearly tossed it around. Already testing durability? Ha!
Opened it up inside my garage. Panels felt lighter than I thought – good for carrying, I guess. But the wood finish? Seemed thin. Like, if you scratched it hard with your nail, you could see a mark. Not exactly heavy-duty lumber vibes.
Putting It Together
Took the whole pile out back next Saturday. Laid down a tarp first to keep crap off the bottom panels – smart move, yeah? Started clicking panels together. They snapped easy, fit was snug. Took me about 20 minutes flat to build a 10×6 section.
First issue popped up immediately: uneven ground. The panels didn’t bend at ALL. Sloped my yard just a bit? Had a wobble spot right in the center. Had to stomp around shoving dirt under the edges to make it flat. Annoying.
Testing Time
Okay, so I used this thing HARD for a month. Every weekend, plus evenings when light held out. Here’s what I threw at it:
- Jumped on it. Did those stomp landings after spikes.
- Dragged heavy coolers and chairs across it – forgot a mat once, uh oh.
- Left it outside fully exposed a whole week. Got rained on three times.
- Had the kids run drills with actual court shoes – rubber soles scraping.
The good? Surface stayed solid. Didn’t crack apart or sag under pressure. Rain dried off quick too, no warping like cheap plywood.
What Gave Out First
Finish wore off fast. After maybe ten sessions? High-traffic spots near the net and service lines turned dull and rough. Saw bare wood peeking through where guys kept sliding.
Edges got beat up worst. Kicking a ball sideways, clipping corners carrying stuff? Chunks splintered off two end panels. Not deep, but ugly. Surface scratches were everywhere – looked like a cat fight happened.
The worst? That wobble spot from my not-perfect ground. That one panel’s connector snapped clean off during a dive. Yeah.
Long Haul? Here’s the Real Deal
Two months in, it’s still usable. Played last night actually. But it ain’t pretty. Splinters need sanding down, scratches collect dirt, and that broken connector? Gorilla glued it, jury-rigged with zip-ties underneath. Ugly fix.
So durable? Sorta. Core material held strong – no rot or snapping mid-panel. But the surface finish? Trash. Feels like birch wood’s natural softness got slapped with a weak stain coating. Good for occasional park hangouts? Sure. Weekly leagues smashing it? Nah. It’ll work, but you’ll see every mark. My take? Portable? Yes. Tough? Meh. Feels like camping gear pretending to be pro. Buy plastic tiles for heavy use.
